Click for USA Swimming's Spring Champ Page March 31, 2007 Spring Championships End in a 2nd Straight Year Win, Two New Olympic Trial Qualifiers, and Three New Members of the National Junior Team
Going into finals on Saturday evening, NBAC was in the lead for combined first place by 30 points. Swimmers Sean Roddy, Elizabeth Pelton, Andrea Staub, Richard Hills, Austin Surhoff, Courtney Kalisz, and Felicia Lee all swam the 200M IM; Robby swimming a best time by 3 seconds, Lee and Surhoff with a 12th place seed, and Kalisz with a 5th place seed. Both the men's and women's 400M Medley Relays were scheduled for the evening session also. Between sessions, Alison Barnes swam the 1500M Free, Brennan Morris and Ian Rowe swam the 800M Free. Rowe placed 8th, earning an additional evening final swim for NBAC.
During finals Kalisz placed 7th, Lee placed 10th in the 200M IM. Austin Surhoff qualified for his first Olympic Trial cut, and earned himself a stop on the National Junior Team with his 9th place swim of 2:06.91. The men's final 800M Free ended in an 8th place finish for Morris, and 9th for Rowe. The girls team won the 400M Medley Relay, and the men's team finished 9th. The final scores of the meet were NBAC 340, Bolles Schol 242, and Sun Devil 210. "It was an outsanding met," Coach Pauls says. After the morning session, the 100M Back was chock-full of NBAC swimmers who secured a final swim: Elizabeth Pelton seeded 1st, Felicia Lee 3rd, and Courtney Kalisz 10th. Lee and Kalisz also made it back in the 100M Fly in 1st and 6th place respectively. Ian Rowe was 20th in the 400M Free, guaranteeing a final swim, and Austin Surhoff went a best time by over a second in the 100M Back. Both relays were also scheduled for the evening session. Lee placed 5th and Kalisz placed 12th in the 100M Back. Kalisz also placed 7th in the 100M Fly. Lee's winning time of 59.82, only two hundredths ahead of the second place finisher, was only a .11 seconds off of the 28 year old NAG record set by Mary T Meagher in 1979. Pelton placed 3rd in the 100M Back; Rowe 22nd in the 200M Free. The women's relay finished 7th and the men's finished 12th. NBAC's combined team is currently in first. "We are looking forward to a great day tomorrow" coach Paul Yetter says. "We have a chance at winning the meet as well as many opportunity's to race well and have some fun."

2007 March 29, 2007 Courtney Kalisz and Brennan Morris Seed 3rd in 400M IM
During this mornings session of Spring Champs, both
Brennan Morris and Courtney Kalisz placed
3rd in the 400M IM. Morris swam a
4:28.27, which was three seconds off the
event leader's 4:25.82, .26 seconds faster
than Morris's seed time of 4:26.08.
Kalisz's 4:51.37 was only 1.81 off the
leader, and a second slower than her seed
time of 4:50.30. With best times, both
athletes could potentially win gold.
Austin Surhoff placed 17th in the 400M IM shaving over 2 seconds off his best with a time of 4:34.81. Both the men's and women's 800M Freestyle Relay will be swam during finals tonight.
March 28, 2007 Andrea Staub Qualifies for the National Junior Team and Swims First Olympic Trial Cut in the 200M Fly
During the first evening of finals in East Meadow, NY,
Andrea Staub finished the 200M Fly placing
10th, qualifying for the National Junior
Team, and earning her first Olympic Trial
cut. Other great swims of the evening
were in the Mile, 200M Back, and 200M Fly.
The meet began with the final heats of the mile. Ian Rowe finished 4th swimming his second fastest time ever, the first being from the previous day. Brennan Morris's mile swim from the first session earned him a 9th place finish. In the 200M Back, Austin Surhoff placed 12th with a 2:06.65, Brennan Morris won the C final heat with a best time of 2:05.99, Elizabeth Pelton placed 3rd (2:15.83), and Courtney Kalisz placed 5th (2:16.38). After the backstroke, Kalisz and Felicia Lee came back with a two, three finish in the 200M Fly: Kalisz in 2:12.40, and Lee in 2:13.12. Tomorrow mornings events include the 200M Freestyle, 400M Individual Medley, and 800M Freestyle Relay. Richard Hills, Rowe, and Surhoff will be swimming the 400M IM for the men with Kalisz and Staub swimming it for the women. Both 800M Freestyle NBAC relays are swimming in the final heat of the event.
Second Session Completed with a Handful of Final Swimmers
Several swimmers finaled during the second session of
Spring Champs, and are waiting in
anticipation for this evenings races.
Courtney Kalisz is seeded 3rd in the 200M
Back with a time of 2:16.68 just ahead of
teammate Elizabeth Pelton, who is seeded 5th
with a time of 2:18.25. Kalisz also
finaled 2nd in the 200M Butterfly, with a
time of 2:14.13, yet again two seeds ahead
of a teammate--Felicia Lee--who swam a time
of 2:14.58.
Austin Surhoff consoled in the 200m Back, Andrea Staub consoled in the 200 fly, and Brennan Morris bonused in the 200m Back. "It should be a very exciting night!!!" coach Armstrong says. Ian's 2nd seed final heat of the 1500m Freestyle will be also raced tonight. March 27, 2007 Ian Rowe Places 2nd in the Mile in Semi-Finals
Ian Rowe placed 2nd today in the Mile during the Semi-Finals of the Spring Champs meet in East Meadow, NY with a time of 15:28.25 (over 5 seconds off his best), and 13 seconds behind Mission Viejo's Chad La Tourette. During last years Spring Champs, Rowe placed 8th with a time of 15:48.57 behind Tourette's 15:34.69. Both men have dropped 20 seconds over the past year, and could drop more during tomorrows final heat. Among the other NBAC swimmer's were Brennan Morris, who also swam the mile and dropped over 8 seconds off his best with a ninth place time of 15:45.58, and Emily Tipton and Courtney Kalisz who swam the Women's 800m Free. Tomorrows events will be the 100m Freestyle, 200m Breaststroke, 200m Backstroke, 200m Butterfly, and final heats of the men's mile and women's 800m Free. |
