Yesterday at Rod Laver Arena (RLA), in Melbourne, Australia, began the 12th FINA World Championships.  Since 2001, this event has occurred in alternating years and is considered the fastest and most competitive non-Olympic international meet.  The Official Melbourne World Champs web page (www.melbourne2007.com.au) says that Australia is estimating over 1000 athletes from 175 countries will participate.  Since the Melbourne champs are the primary international meet for the pre-Olympic year, it will also help predict the 2008 Olympic team.

This years US roster is highly concentrated with swimmers from the 2004 Olympic team.  From the Men’s team are Ian Crocker, Brendan Hansen, Larsen Jensen, Klete Keller, Jason Lezak, Ryan Lochte, Aaron Peirsol, Michael Phelps, Scott Usher, Peter Vanderkaay, Erik Vendt, and Neil Walker.   From the Women’s are Natalie Coughlin, Margaret Hoelzer, Katie Hoff, Kalyn Keller, Tara Kirk, Kara Lynn Joyce, Rachel Komisarz, Dana Vollmer, and Amanda Weir.

The top male and female competitors for the US are both NBAC’s Michael Phelps and Katie HoffPhelps competing in the 200 Free, 100, 200 Fly, 200, 400 IM, and 4x100 Free Relay, and Hoff competing in the 200, 400 Free, 200, 400 IM, and alternate in the 4x200 Free Relay.  Phelps is yet to swim his individual events.

Hoff was the top American performer in the 400m free finishing 4th with a best time of 4:05.65.  She is also seated first in her 200m IM after swimming the top time of 2:11.75 during semi-finals (1.7 seconds off her American record set in 2006.) Phelps is yet to swim his individual events.

The Men’s and Women’s 4x100 Relays and 400m Freestyle Finals have also been completed resulting in a 1st for the men’s relay (Phelps, Walker, Jones, and Lezak) and 2nd for the women’s (Coughlin, Nymeyer, Weir, and Joyce).  Peter Vanderkaay placed 4th in the 400m Freestyle finals with a 3:46.36, and Hoff finished 4th in the 400m Freestyle with a 4:05.65.
