There were some 1,500 people jammed into every corner of LeJeune Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy at just past 6:30 p.m. Friday, most standing, and many pointing cameras or video recorders toward the very center of a pool deck crowded with a bunch of girls no older than 10, and a tall guy in a white swim cap and gray sweat jacket with dark headphones.

Away from those pesky waves, a meter deep, where you can cut through that clean still water like a great white shark overcome with blood lust. It takes a special breed of human to take advantage of the depths (super-sized lungs and impossible flexibility tend to help...), yet these days, the so-called "5th Stroke" tends to be under-appreciated.
