Murray Stephens has been the Head Coach of the
North Baltimore Aquatic Club for thirty five
years. Murray and his staff have made NBAC the
most prestigious Age Group and Olympic
Development USA Swimming club in the country.
While developing hundreds of young swimmers to
USA Swimming National Rankings, Murray also has
earned the American Swim Coaches Association
Gold Award of Excellence for placing National
Championship finalists for twenty years. In
1984, Murray coached Theresa Andrews who won two
gold medals in backstroke at the Los Angeles,
California Olympic Games.
In 1992, Murray was Anita Nall’s coach when she
set a World Record in the 200 meter Breaststroke
and went on to earn gold, silver and bronze
medals in the Barcelona, Spain, Olympic Games.
In 1996, while Murray served as Assistant Coach
on the Women’s Olympic Team staff, his NBAC
swimmers Whitney Metzler and Beth Botsford swam
for the Women’s Team at the Atlanta, Georgia
Olympic Games. Whitney placed eighth in the 400
IM and Beth won two gold medals in the 100
Backstroke and the 400 medley relay. In the fall
of 1996, Murray was named United States Swimming
Coach of the Year as well as the American Swim
Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
Professionally, Murray constructed, owns, and
operates Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center,
consisting of two 50 meter pools and fitness
center. Murray also owns the Golden Meadows Swim
Center in Lancaster, PA and the Joppatowne Swim
Club in Harford County, Maryland. He also serves
on both the American Swim Coaches Association
Board of Directors, and on the Board of
Directors of United States Swimming. In January
1998, Murray traveled to Perth, Australia as
coach for the United States to the FINA World
Aquatic Championships. In March of 2000, Murray
served as the Head Men’s Coach of the FINA short
course World Championships in Athens, Greece.
Murray and his wife Patty have four children.
