Before Harold M. Stephens would build a pool for his family, he wanted to be sure his son Murray could swim.

In the basement of the Alcazar Hotel, under the guidance of Eric Steingass, Murray took his first strokes. It was in high school at Loyola Blakefield, however, that competitive swimming caught his attention, dedication, and finally his passion. Training with the KCO team through his collegiate years he finished a conference record holder at Loyola College. Joining fellow coach Tim Pierce at the Towson YMCA in 1967, the North Baltimore Aquatic Club was incorporated in the spring of 1968. Murray became the head coach of NBAC in 1971. Sending Olympic Trial qualifiers to every OT since 1968, NBAC's numbers are staggering. Over 200 National Age Group Records, 11 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in Olympic Competition; Four Spring Championship titles, 15 LC World records, 27 LC American records; currently holding 53 age group records.

Murray and his staff have made NBAC the most prestigious age-group club in history. While coaching at Loyola High School from 1978-1999, Murray amassed a 125-15-2 record, including numerous MSA titles and the 1980 National Prep School Championship. Murray's swimmers have competed in international meets on every continent on the planet. They have finalled or medaled in World, Pan American, and Pan Pacific Championships, Goodwill Games, World University Games, World Youth Games, among others. Murray was a USA Olympic Coach on the 1996 women's squad and a National Team coach for the 1995 Pan Pac team, the 1998 and 1999 World Championships. Murray was named USOC Swimming Coach of the Year and ASCA Coach of the Year in 1996. Murray has mentored coaches such as 2008 USOC Developmental coach Paul Yetter, and Bob Bowman, 3 time ASCA coach of the year, USA coach of the year twice and Developmental coach of the year once. Murray has been honored by Loyola College with the Andrew White Medal, induction into the Loyola High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and ASCA Hall of Fame in 2006. Murray has served as a Vice President of ASCA, Technical VP of USA Swimming, Eastern Zone Director, Maryland Swimming Chairman. He owns and operates the Meadowbrook Aquatic & Fitness Center, which serves as a model for coach owned facilities nationwide. Murray married Patricia Reilly in 1986 and they have four children; Reilly, Kerry, Jes and Henry.
