| Beth Anne Botsford |
Beth's Botsford's stat in competitive swimming might be described as fitful. Beginning as so many do, in
Summer League, she swam one year at age seven at Dulaney Swim Club, and gave it up for soccer! But the
water drew her back. She returned to Dulaney and age nine and this time it stuck. Approached by Patty
Stephens and Coach Tom Himes of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, her father Kevin, balked at the idea of
her swimming three nights a week but his fears were soon assuaged. Swimming with her sister Stacie at North
Baltimore, Beth's inaugural season swimming year round saw her begin an assault on National Age Group
Records, eight total in backstroke and butterfly for ages 9-10 and 11-12; five of which are still standing (as well
as two 13-14 NAG's) As a 13 year old, Beth was chosen Rookie of the Meet at National Championships in
Seattle in 1994. A year later, Beth won the 200 backstroke and placed second in the 100. That summer, she
won the 200 back again and qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships. In the Olympic year 1996, Beth led a
formidable NBAC team to Trials, herself winning the 200 Back and placing second in the 100. She joined
NBAC teammate Whitney Metzler and coach Murray Stephens on the 1996 US Olympic Team. Winning gold
in a race she led from start to finish (100 Back) placed Beth on the Gold medal winning 4 x 100 Medley Relay. |
