Joshua
Burton-Prateley breaks
World Record
Congratulations
to NBAC swimmer Joshua
Burton-Prateley for
breaking the Concept 2
ergometer world record
last week in the hour
row. Josh, aged 12,
broke the 12 & under
record covering 12, 896
meters in 60 minutes
breaking the previous
record by 150 meters.
Ergometer, or rowing
machine, training began
as a winter training
method for rowers to
keep them in shape while
they unable to row
outdoors. It has become
a sport in its own right
with over a million
competitive ergometer
rowers from 66 countries
taking part. Ergomters
are used as a cross
training method for many
other sports including
swimming.
Josh will be attempting
another world record row
at Meadowbrook on Monday
May 19th
starting at 3:30. He
will attempt to become
the first 12 & under
ever to complete a full
rowing marathon (42, 195
meters or 26+ miles); it
should take him roughly
four hours to complete.

Schubert: Clarity In The
Costume Drama
Apr 8, 2008
Craig Lord
Mark Schubert, head
coach to aquatic
superpower the USA, is a
man who knows his job:
to produce the fastest
swim team in the
world...
...Part of Schubert's
work is to get on the
national swim hotline
and instill in his
coaches and swimmers a
sense of belonging in a
programme that is always
at the leading edge.
What Phelps and Bowman
do today is known by key
people across the US
tomorrow. It inspires
and instructs. Who else
is held out as a force
to follow? 'Eddie Reese,
he's got three world
record holders, Terri
McKeever working with
Natalie Coughlin,
and what's going on in
the culture of North
Baltimore, the best club
programme in America. It
produced Michael Phelps,
now Katie Hoff. Maybe
two of the best swimmers
ever. Its exciting for
the rest of the coaches
to learn from those kind
of cultures.' And
success begat success,
generation after
generation.

LOVE TO RACE!!!
Somehow
over the past 10
years or so the
word
competitiveness
has become a
dirty
word. However,
like it or not,
it is the single
most important
factor in
driving
success. Everyone
is born with a
different level
of
competitiveness;
however it can
and should be
developed and
sharpened. Take
every
opportunity when
you are at
practice to race
your lane
mates. Race the
person in the
lane next to
you; try to
catch one of the
younger kids in
a different
lane. When I was
swimming for a
little team in
NJ I used to
race my coach up
and down the
pool!!! My
father who swims
a mile every
morning “just
for heath” tries
to swim a 100
for every 50 the
“old guy” in the
lane next to him
does.
The bottom line
is that
Competitiveness
is fun and it
drives you to
get better. And
nine times out
of ten it is not
the most
talented swimmer
who will win,
rather it is the
swimmer with the
strongest
competitive
drive, the
swimmer that
will do what
ever it takes to
win!!!
